Dunno, maybe it works on some people

My partner and I were both raised in very "no sex until marriage" families (theirs was Catholic, mine was secular and conservative).

We had sex at the first available opportunity, more than six years before we got around to inviting the government into our relationship.

Not to be all "puritanism is evil" but the fact that abstinence before marriage does nothing to address the intimate needs of people even outside of sex is prolly at least a little to blame.

Anti-sex culture is also anti-hugging, anti-cuddling, which leaves people suuuuuper affection-starved and more prone to making rash decisions in their pursuit of affection. Also, cultures that lack a physical aspect to their socialisation are generally less agressive, a taboo around touch has THAT much of an effect on people's wellbeing.
