Yeah, uh... Anastasia? Wasn't very Russian either. Her mother? German. Paternal grandmother? Danish. Paternal great-grandmother? German. Paternal great-great-grandmother? Prussian (AKA German).

If you write a book portraying a historical figure, like, oh, Leonardo da Vinci, as a vampire or robot or alien, no one will bat an eye.

But write a book in which Leonardo falls in love with another man and you'll wake up with an angry mob outside your house.
I innocently walked into a huge debate full of people applying modern ideas of race onto historical peoples.
You know what I hate? Explaining to people born and raised in the US that the rest of the world doesn't operate the same way.
