Why didn't anyone tell me this was happening? That's hilarious and I could have used the laughs at the time!

...is there a correlation between "parents who are really obsessive about what nicknames people are allowed to call their kids" and "parents who are otherwise overbearing and control-freak-y"?

Because at the moment all I can think of is my mother (insisted on giving us traditional English nicknames once we crossed the Atlantic) and my MIL (was adamant that her children be called by their full names), and n=2 is not a good sample.

(For the record, neither of them succeeded. My siblings and I all go by aggressively foreign names, and my partner and sib-in-law exclusively use nicknames.)
I think the funniest culture clash, for my family back home, is "I went to the 24/7 drugstore in the middle of the night to get ice cream, toilet paper, a pack of stamps, and a toy for my toddler" because back home, drugstores are only open during the day and they sell drugs and THAT'S IT.

"I'm a feminist, and I just can't respect a woman who committed suicide over a man."

Wow, you swung straight out of feminism and back into regular ol' misogyny there. Been reading Dworkin, maybe?
Christianity is hilarious in that there's a saint for just about everything.

If I saw an article from a reputable source saying "and this is St. Richard Peckerwood Cox, patron saint of dildo makers" I would not be surprised.
So as it turns out, I've been mispronouncing the name Bea my whole life.

(Bee, not Be-ah, apparently.)

I wish that "thinking about whether you actually like your name, and changing it if you decide the answer is no" was far more normalized in our society (and that society was set up to accommodate this, ahem).

"I don't really like the name my parents gave me, but changing it at this point would be so weird" is such a common experience, even among cis people.

Me: "Eh, I just never really liked the name my parents picked for me."

People who don't know I'm trans, usually: "Awww, I'm sorry, have you considered changing it?"

People who know I'm trans [and aren't already steeped in queerness]: "How DARE you?! Your parents put a lot of thought into that name! It's their first, most precious gift to you! INGRATE!"

[Plot twist: my mother put zero thought into my name. She was expecting the other binary genitals, so when I was born she just hastily grabbed the name of a relative.]
