I think a lot of middle class USians would find it highly educational to live a few months in a truly sketchy neighborhood. I don't mean "whatever part of New York City they're most afraid of", but something more like Eastern Europe during and shortly after the fall of communism.

It might even break them of the belief that safety is correlated with racial demographics.
