There's a trend among leftists to make communism look better by sanitizing it.
I find this horrifying. Literally every ex-Soviet I know has horrible trauma regarding the USSR. All of them passed this trauma on to their kids. (That's on top of their WWII trauma, mind you. That part of the world had been a trauma conga line for centuries.)
It's also unnecessary! I know the data is harder to find (because: propaganda), but capitalism has hurt and killed so many people!
