Does anyone know the answer to why RPG classes with an animal companion are so frequently loathed?

It's not even a case of people saying "I won't play this class" - it's "I hate this class and it shouldn't exist", sometimes backed up with banning/modding the class out of existence in their personal games.

I had no idea that was a thing! I love classes with companions, I had a hunter in WoW and also a warlock. A GPS game I play called Orna allows all classes (warrior, thief, mage) to have a wide variety of followers for different uses.

Interesting! We must run in very different gaming circles. I've never played WoW. This trend is most prominent in D&D - any kind of companion class gets very quickly lambasted. But I've seen it in a few others (Pillars of Eternity being the one that spawned this particular post.)

I have a visceral memory of getting the GM's approval to show up with an animal companion class to a table one day, only for him to announce at the start of the session that animal companion classes are the worst and that he was going to kill my pet elephant. (He failed, for the record.)
