Depends on what you're looking at: if it's clothing or some other non-collectible (this may not cover all clothing and may cover other things), they're lying, if it's like a toy or something it might be a collector's item that they haven't unboxed but were extremely pleased to own. Source: I hang around in the Transformers toy fandom every now and then

I... okay, I can accept that people buy toys or things Just To Have Them On A Shelf but I can't grok it.

If I have a toy or something I'm playing with it, damnit.

well, yeah. my evil helicopter comes to and from school with me every day and i have a tiny transformer who goes in my pocket, and i've unboxed every last toy i've ever gotten. But I respect the people who just want a pretty line of things. I do have some of mine back home in a little display case acting out various scenes from The Inside Of My Brain in proper toy-collector style
