I realized I don't have the relevant life experience to know this.

Why do people complain about assembling IKEA furniture? Do other stores sell you bookshelves and desks pre-assembled?

My nephew's desk is all wooden and pretty solid, with the name of a small-town hotel rubber-stamped on the inside of a drawer; it can't be less than 50 years old. There's no taking it apart for transport - we amazed the people at the Salvation Army shop by being able to cram it into a small hatchback with the back seats folded down and millimetres to spare. It's much nicer than my flatpack desk and I'm envious.

My own favourite item of furniture is a tall, free-standing bookshelf, locally made out of solid pine; it had to come on a truck and moving house with it was a hassle, but it still isn't enough for all my books...

I don't know why people complain so much about assembling flatpack furniture. Aren't large-scale three-dimensional puzzles fun to other people? I'm only bothered by the pre-drilled holes not lining up or other shoddy manufacturing.

They do! And also Ikea instructions are entirely visual with no text at all, and I guess some people with worse visual processing than me find that confusing. I've never had a problem with it, it just requires you pay attention to what you're doing
