I can't prove anything.

But the sudden "end OTW racism" campaign, the various allegations about what horrible works AO3 is full of, the insults against fic writers and readers, while the US is hurtling facefirst toward actual literal book burnings, when politicians and "concerned groups" are attacking libraries and archives left and right, when people are making laws about what books we are "allowed" to read is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth.

I've always said that antis and other younger fandom types that weren't around for stuff like strikethrough have become "accidentally conservative". We're a generation that has absolutely no privacy, and therefore we feel the need to morally justify every single thing we do or enjoy. They don't even realize that they're playing right into the hands of the people they claim to despise.

I don't think it was an accident; rather, older conservatives targeted youth, especially at risk youth, with disguised conservative rhetoric, and we (leftists of my generation and older) failed to prevent it. We agitated but didn't properly educate and indoctrinate, so we ended up with a generation of "leftists" who only unlearned the basics of the bigotries that actually affected them, pay lip service to other subjects, have little critical thinkf skill, and are easily radicalized to conservative viewpoints.

The Bush era fucked us up badly in so many ways.
