After telling the blood donation people that of course I would do no serious physical activity today (I lied: I went home and promptly started hauling mulch, painting, and digging up bamboo), I asked myself why do I do this to myself?
The answer is tragically simple: because I come from a family that did not let me have limits.
A day or two after I got my wisdom teeth out as a teenager, my mother insisted that we go to a scenic town with lots of cute little shops (and lots of walking). I stayed passed out in the car in a Vicodin haze. She left me there for several hours to go shopping.
Another time, this time in my early twenties, I passed out while we were at a museum. She left me on a bench in the lobby and walked the whole thing. Once she was done, she dragged me to go see a specific exhibit, then tried to take me to another museum (thankfully it was closed for renovations).
Then there was the time she made me hike six miles (this happened in September... in Florida) when I was sick and hadn't eaten properly in weeks. In fact, the only things I'd had in the prior forty eight hours were half a muffin and a cup of hot cocoa. As a bonus, the reason she took me on this trip was ostensibly to help me get better.
