Big name writers: all jerks, or only mostly?

In a creative writing class I took, we read On Writing. In it, Stephen King complains about people who don't write much calling themselves writers, insists that his way of writing is the One True Way, rails against fanfiction, and claims that there's nothing you can do to turn a bad writer into a good one.

Stephen King has massive elitism issues is what I'm getting at.
