The fact of the matter is that if you live to old age, you're likely to get fat, likely to get ugly (by societal definitions of ugly), very likely to become disabled, and guaranteed to become old.

But there are multiple generations of people who, having been fed a long stream of bigotry and "health" product advertising and so so much propaganda, believe that if THEY eat the right diet and do the right fitness regimen and buy the right products, THEY will maintain their mid-twenties body for sixty years.

And because they're convinced they will never be on the recieving end of that bigotry, they don't fight against it - they join in because they've been brainwashed into thinking it's a ~choice~ to "let yourself go" and therefore it's okay to hate people (hatred feels better than self-loathing) - and by the time they get to the point where they admit they need it (if they ever do), it's too late and no one will listen to them.

For the record, my mother spent more money and effort and sent me to more doctors to deal with my acne (which was about average for a teenager and which I was barely bothered by) than she did to deal with my, I repeat, potentially lethal and definitely life-ruining bipolar.

Okay, I can sort of understand making Marie Antoinette generically pretty, because all we have of her is a bunch of portraits where she looks generically pretty. But we have PHOTOS of Anastasia! We know exactly what she looked like! And she didn't look like that at all!

(Oh, and the whole "change the scenery from something vaguely relevant to the time and place to a generic background" thing is also pretty crappy.)

It is 2019, over half a century since the Civil Rights Movement and second-wave feminism, and so-called progressives are still insisting that attractive people can't possible be evil/abusive/bigoted.

My siblings must be the fucking paragons of goodness, in that case, they look like they belong on magazine covers.
Writing a character with severe, highly visible scars is making me confront my own lookism.

Which is good, but also a lot more uncomfortable than I want to admit.
I'm trying to train myself out of flinching and looking away when I see people who are missing body parts or who are disfigured.

Unfortunately, there's no lookism switch in my brain that I can just easily turn off. Instead I have to slowly train myself by looking at images online, where no one is harmed by me taking a minute to collect myself.
