Kind of amazing how my family made it clear that:
a) the subject matter I'd studied in undergrad was utterly useless and I was a total [bleep] for picking it
b) the fact that I didn't go to grad school (which, I would've taken... the exact same major) meant I was totally worthless
This wasn't even a "mom says this, dad says that" thing. They *all* expressed (loudly and angrily) both of these views.
Particularly fascinating: I told my grandmother that I was taking some time off from school to work and shore up my health (not exaggerating when I say undergrad almost killed me) and finances (LOLsob US tuition), and she went on a near-apoplectic rant about how I would "like working too much and never get another degree!"
Like, of all the things to complain about? "You're going to enjoy working [which is a thing I expect everyone to do because socialism bad] so much that you'll... keep working instead of doing something that made you miserable and nearly-dead!"
"I think you're better off dead than with ~only~ a bachelor's, you worthless scum, why don't you call me more often? :("
